# Start from a template

> Remix a featured template into a project of your own, open it in Replit Design, and restyle it until it's yours.

⏰ *Estimated time: 10 minutes*

A template gives you a running start: a finished design you copy and make yours. In this guide you'll remix a featured template into your own project, open it in Replit Design, and restyle it, no blank prompt required.

## Before you start

You need a [Replit account](https://replit.com). Nothing else: remixing and restyling happen with clicks and prompts.

## Remix a template into your project

This guide uses **Supercar showcase** (Apex 01) as its example. Any template works the same way.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Pick a template">
    Choose a template to start from. Selecting one opens its cover page, with a live preview and sharing options. Here are a few:

    <div className="template-gallery">
      <CardGroup cols={2}>
        <Card title="Supercar showcase" img="https://mintcdn.com/replit/9Q_lVrxG2Dh35jz1/images/design/replit-design/templates/supercar-showcase.webp?fit=max&auto=format&n=9Q_lVrxG2Dh35jz1&q=85&s=3807a96319b4d974f30bda957f6bd92e" href="https://replit.com/t/replit-gallery/repls/Apex-01/view?canvas=true" width="1920" height="1080" data-path="images/design/replit-design/templates/supercar-showcase.webp" />

        <Card title="Coffee shop landing page" img="https://mintcdn.com/replit/9Q_lVrxG2Dh35jz1/images/design/replit-design/templates/coffee-shop-landing-page.webp?fit=max&auto=format&n=9Q_lVrxG2Dh35jz1&q=85&s=40b973149d3d5b96efd9a8ccf73af241" href="https://replit.com/t/replit-gallery/repls/Lumora/view?canvas=true" width="1920" height="1080" data-path="images/design/replit-design/templates/coffee-shop-landing-page.webp" />

        <Card title="Wedding invitation" img="https://mintcdn.com/replit/9Q_lVrxG2Dh35jz1/images/design/replit-design/templates/wedding-invitation.webp?fit=max&auto=format&n=9Q_lVrxG2Dh35jz1&q=85&s=9f4fbf18f63e2ef72727030e2a835d0a" href="https://replit.com/t/replit-gallery/repls/Dreamy-Invite/view?canvas=true" width="1920" height="1080" data-path="images/design/replit-design/templates/wedding-invitation.webp" />

        <Card title="Fashion ecommerce storefront" img="https://mintcdn.com/replit/9Q_lVrxG2Dh35jz1/images/design/replit-design/templates/fashion-ecommerce.webp?fit=max&auto=format&n=9Q_lVrxG2Dh35jz1&q=85&s=324c62315f98e3746d32ae3b8e2fb591" href="https://replit.com/t/replit-gallery/repls/Fashion-Ecommerce/view?canvas=true" width="1600" height="900" data-path="images/design/replit-design/templates/fashion-ecommerce.webp" />
      </CardGroup>
    </div>

  </Step>

  <Step title="Remix it">
    Select **Remix this App** to make your own copy. New to remixing? See [Remix an app](/features/projects-and-artifacts/remix-an-app).

    <Frame>
      <img src="https://mintcdn.com/replit/9Q_lVrxG2Dh35jz1/images/design/replit-design/template-remix.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=9Q_lVrxG2Dh35jz1&q=85&s=08a6a0a8c6bd71d5b1a5d376802ac336" alt="The Apex 01 template cover page with View live app, Remix this App, Copy, and share buttons" width="605" height="399" data-path="images/design/replit-design/template-remix.png" />
    </Frame>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name it">
    Give your copy a name and an optional description, then select **Remix App**.

    <Frame>
      <img src="https://mintcdn.com/replit/9Q_lVrxG2Dh35jz1/images/design/replit-design/template-remix-name.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=9Q_lVrxG2Dh35jz1&q=85&s=f4ce6f0953f09a25305fe9c08bc9eeeb" alt="The Remix App dialog with name and description fields and the Remix App button" width="578" height="436" data-path="images/design/replit-design/template-remix-name.png" />
    </Frame>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Meet your copy in Replit Design">
    Your copy opens in Replit Design with the template as a frame on the canvas. This is now your project; nothing you do here affects the original.

    <Frame>
      <img src="https://mintcdn.com/replit/9Q_lVrxG2Dh35jz1/images/design/replit-design/design-vs-build-project.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=9Q_lVrxG2Dh35jz1&q=85&s=d3f7fcbc912ce59d00f6d88e41b9ba38" alt="The remixed Apex 01 template open in Replit Design, with the APEX X1 supercar frame on the canvas, the design prompt box, and the toolbar" width="2000" height="1255" data-path="images/design/replit-design/design-vs-build-project.png" />
    </Frame>
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Make it yours

Select the template's frame and start reshaping it:

* **Follow a [suggestion](/design/explore-suggestions)**: new directions generate as fresh frames, so the original stays for comparison.
* **[Chat about it](/design/chat-about-your-design)**: select the frame and brief Agent in your own words, *"warmer colors"*, *"swap the hero car for a vintage roadster"*.

<Frame caption="The Apex X1 frame on the canvas, with Agent responding to a suggestion and proposing follow-ups.">
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/replit/9Q_lVrxG2Dh35jz1/images/design/replit-design/template-make-it-yours.webp?fit=max&auto=format&n=9Q_lVrxG2Dh35jz1&q=85&s=0e14842b7e51c3f0d207c6d7e99ad4b6" alt="The Apex X1 frame on the canvas with the chat panel showing Agent exploring different approaches and offering follow-up suggestions to push the design further" width="1600" height="1004" data-path="images/design/replit-design/template-make-it-yours.webp" />
</Frame>

Keep going until the design reads as yours, not the template's.

## Already mid-design?

If you're exploring in an existing project and want a template inside the design you already have, don't remix; add one from the library panel instead. See [Add templates and inspiration](/design/add-templates-and-inspiration).

## Next steps

* [Build your design](/design/build-your-design): turn the restyled template into a working app.
* [Create a design system](/design/create-a-design-system): extract a system from your version so everything you make next matches it.
